ANSWERS:

ABOUT THE TOURISTS:

1.How many people are currently in the camp?
Four people. There are four sets of utensils and four names on the duty roster.

2.When did they arrive (today or a few days ago)?
A few days ago. A spiderweb has formed between the tent and the tree.

3.How did the tourists arrive?
By boat. You can see the paddles near the tree.

4.Is the camp far from the nearest settlement?
No, it’s nearby. A chicken is visible in the lower-left corner, which suggests there’s a settlement close by.

5.Which direction is the wind blowing: south or north?
From the south. The flag on the tent and the denser spruce branches indicate the direction—denser foliage faces south.

6.What time of day is depicted?
Morning. Since we already know the cardinal directions, shadows falling westward indicate the sun is in the east, which means it’s morning.

7.Where is Shura?
Shura is catching butterflies with a net.

8.Who was on duty yesterday (name)?
Kolya. He’s rummaging through a backpack labeled “K.” Vasya is photographing something (a tripod is visible in a backpack labeled “V”), and Shura is catching butterflies. Today’s duty is Petya (according to the duty roster), so Kolya was on duty yesterday.

9.What date is shown (day and month)?
August 8th. It’s the 8th because Petya is on duty today. It’s August because there’s a watermelon in the camp.

ROOM

1.What season is depicted in the illustration?
Winter. The boy is wearing felt boots, and the stove is lit (the vent is open).

2.What month is it?
December. The last page of the calendar is displayed.

3.Is there running water in the apartment?
No, there isn’t. The boy is using a washstand, which suggests the absence of running water.

4.Who else lives in the apartment besides the son and father?
A girl, most likely of preschool age, as there are dolls visible in the room.

5.What is the father’s occupation?
He is a doctor. A reflex hammer is on the table, and a stethoscope is in his pocket.

STEAMBOAT

1.Is the steamship moving upstream or downstream?
The steamship is moving upstream. The sharp angle of the wooden base of the beacon always points against the current.

2.What season is depicted in the illustration?
Autumn. By examining the tree crowns, we can determine where the south is. Then, observing the birds that have gathered in flocks heading south, we can conclude it is autumn.

3.How deep is the river at this point?
Shallow. The sailor is probing the bottom with a stick.

4.How far is the dock from the boat?
The dock is very close. A group of passengers is already gathered at the bottom with their luggage.

5.Which side of the river is the dock on?
The dock is on the right bank of the river. We can mentally follow the current and observe which side the passengers with luggage are gathered on.

6.What time of day is it in the illustration?
It is evening. The shepherds are driving their livestock toward their settlement, and lanterns are lit on the beacons.
